FAQs: Pewter Care Instructions

How do you clean and polish pewter?

Pewter products should be cleaned by hand-wash only. After every use, apply lukewarm soapy water and use a soft cloth to clean, patting the piece dry immediately afterward. Avoid exposure to high heat appliances such as dishwashers, ovens, or stoves. To polish pewter and restore its shine and lustre, carefully apply silver polish.

What about cleaning pewter combined with other materials?

For pieces that combine pewter with glass or ceramic elements, never put them in a dishwasher and avoid frequent use with hot drinks. Pat the glass dry immediately after every use with a soft cloth and air dry if necessary.

For pieces that combine pewter with wood, wipe down the wood surface until dry after every use. Then, apply 2-3 drops of vegetable oil to a cloth or paper towel and coat the wood surface with the oil before leaving the wood to dry. Do not wash the oil off. This will increase the longevity of the wood and prevent cracking from dryness.

For pieces that combine pewter with stainless steel, pat dry immediately after every use and never use heavy or abrasive cleaning tools like metal scrubs. These will scratch the steel and pewter. Use dishwashing liquid to clean the piece by soaking it, rinsing it, and patting it dry.
