Pewter FAQs for Food-Safe, Lead-Free Tableware and Barware | Silasmith

FAQs: About Pewter

What is pewter made of? What are the characteristics of pewter?

Pewter is a non-ferrous alloy composed of tin, copper, and antimony. Our pewter contains 95% pure tin, with the remaining 5% being a mixture of copper and antimony. We certify that our tin is no less than 95% pure for every piece we sell.

Is pewter food-safe? Does pewter contain lead?

Yes, all of our products–including our pewter tableware, dinnerware, and barware–is food-safe. There is no lead in our manufacturing process. Moreover, our tin is responsibly sourced from our supplier, ensuring there is less than 0.002 ppm, which is considered safe for production and use.

Does pewter tarnish, stain, or rust?

Pewter does not rust or stain. Like any metal product, however, it may tarnish over time. This can be avoided with proper preventative care, which involves polishing your pewter using common household ingredients to restore its lustre.
